So, I was 97.3% sure that I wasn’t going to make my word count for July. I had almost a full week where I didn’t write a single thing (centered around TF Con, funny enough) and we’ve had tons of life stuff happening here.

But!! According to my new, handy-dandy new writing tracker, I wrote just over 12,000 words in July. This floors me, especially because I didn’t think I’d make my 10k!

Anyway, here’s what I accomplished:

Posted
A Fourth to Remember. 2500 words. I wanted something fluffy to work on so I grabbed a prompt and went to work. This was fun. :)

Atrocity. 15,700 words. This is the “Untitled Heat Fic” I’ve been working on forever and a day. This is why I needed the fluff to work on. Every time I opened up the file I felt like I needed to take a shower to wash away my sins. If you decide to give this a read, please mind the tags.

Long Fics
The Spark Remembers. 41,800 words. This is my fic for the @tfbigbang. I finished the editing yesterday, so it’s done!!! Now I just have to wait another two weeks before I can start posting it. 😭

Short Fics
Must Like Cats. 2800 words. Sparkr fic, a sequel to Swipe Right. No progress since last time.

One More Night. 3200 words. I made some progress on this one, but then it got all emotional and I have to think about how I need it to go.

Anniversary. 2000 words. This is fluff antidote to Atrocity. I’ve started posting it to Tumblr in rough format. Once it’s done I’ll clean it up and post it to AO3.

Holy cow, I can’t believe it’s July already. :O But here’s my June update!

This felt like a bit of a slack month for writing, to be honest. I have a bunch of WIPs on the go, but I kept swapping between them and it didn’t feel like I was making any progress on any of them. But I wrote just over 13,000 words, which is exactly what I did last month… And I was working on my Big Bang fic then. So! Looks like that 10k/month target is really working out.

Posted
Peer Review. 11,800 words. I finished this up and posted the second chapter not too long after we got back from vacation. And yes, it’s totally set up for a sequel. :) I pretty much know what’s going to happen, but I need to work on some other things first.

Brothers. 1500 words. As promised, I cleaned this one up, added a better ending, and posted it to AO3. This was fun! ^.^

Still Here. 930 words. This is an IDW2 drabble between Codexa/Leviathan. I don’t even know how to categorize it, but my brain wouldn’t let me work on anything else until I banged this out.

Long Fics
The Spark Remembers. This is my fic for the @tfbigbang. I’m about 2/3 of the way through editing, and (!!) I’ve been matched with my artists (and I LOVE THEM!) I’m super excited for August, when we can start posting.

Short Fics
Untitled Heat Fic. A whole 6 words shy of 10k, and I still have to write the last few scenes. I finally got some progress done on this and - boy howdy, did this one turn dark. I’m going to tag the shit out of it when I post it. >.<

Must Like Cats. 2800 words. Sparkr fic, a sequel to Swipe Right. I hope this is going to be as adorable as I’m imagining it’s going to be, but before I get to the cuteness I need to wade through some angst.

One More Night. 1100 words. This will probably be a one-shot, but it’s a TFP “what if Optimus died and Smokescreen got the Matrix” Ratchet/OP fic, building off Darkmount’s Prime.

A Fourth to Remember. 2400 words. This one’s finished; I literally finished this about 30 minutes ago, and just need to do the editing! It should be posted in time for the 4th of July. :)

 May update!

Like I said in my last update, I figured I wouldn’t get much writing done this month. We left on vacation for the last two weeks of the month, and I got almost no writing done while we were away.

But, that’s not to say that I didn’t get any writing done in the month! I’ve set a goal for myself of 10,000 words a month. Considering that I got almost zero writing done for two weeks of the month and still wrote over 13,000 words, I think that’s a good target for me.

Onto the updates!

Long Fics

The Spark Remembers. This is my fic for the @tfbigbang! The goal for the event was 20k, and my fic is finished at just shy of 40k. o.O Oops! I’m finishing up the editing on the last few scenes, then it’ll be a month or so of tweaking and polishing. I can’t wait to see who the artist is that I’ll be paired with. ^.^

Short Fics

Brothers. About 1450 words. This was a sort of a prompt fill; you can read the rough of it here. I’m cleaning it up some more and added a a slightly more settled ending. Once I get some time I’ll post it to AO3.

Peer Review. Currently about 11,600 words. This one is almost done! I started posting it before we left on vacation, but just wasn’t able to finish the last chapter while we were on the road. I hope to have the last bit finished next week. (*crosses fingers*)

Untitled Heat Fic.  No progress, still at 6400 words. This was originally going to be straight lemon, but while we were driving I realized how this would affect Bluestreak… and the fic ballooned. We’ll see where it goes once I get a chance to work on it.

Hound onlined his optics blearily, and then groaned. His helm throbbed. He was face-down on a rocky surface, and his hands and feet were bound.

Great.

“Oh, you’re back online already. I figured I’d shocked you hard enough that you’d be out for hours.” There was a disgruntled-sounding grunt. “My mistake. I won’t make it again.”

Rolling his helm to the side towards the sound of the voice, Hound saw grey pedes. He lifted his helm slightly and glared up at the Decepticon sitting on a rock near him. “I guess I’m just tougher than you thought,” Hound spat through his static.

Bluestreak stopped polishing his rifle long enough to cast a disdainful look down at the green mech. “Yeah. You’re really tough, Autobot. That’s why you’re in cuffs on the ground, and I’m sitting here waiting for a ride back to base with my prisoner.”

Doing these progress reports about once a month feels right, so I think I’ll aim to keep doing that.

First thing: I completed Camp Nanowrimo this year for the first time. It’s more open-ended than Nanowrimo, letting you set your own goals and targets. I’ve set a personal goal of 10,000 words a month, which seems very doable, so that’s what I used for my writing target this time.

Well...

I kinda blew past that target in the first week or so. XD Which is fine! I’ve been focusing on my @tfbigbang fic, so that’s what most of my words went towards.

Now, on with the stats…

Long Fics

TF Big Bang fic. Working title: The Spark Remembers. Currently sitting at about 34,500 words, which means I’m well over the target of 20k for the event. I’d anticipated five chapters, but it looks like it’ll have six… I’ve had some other issues as well. Once it’s all drafted I’m going to take a close look at it to see if I went overly verbose anywhere.

Short Fics

Peer Review. 6200 words. New Sparkr fic. Coming along still… And I’ve figured out a nice ending for it. ^.^

Untitled Heat Fic. No progress, still at 6400 words. Direct sequel to Reciprocity, Bluestreak POV but with a different partner.

Once I have the Big Bang fic drafted I’m going to throw some words down on one of the bunnies my muse has been wondering about, so maybe you’ll see hints of that in next months’ report. :)

Summary: How Bluestreak and Hound gave each other nicknames.

*****

Hound couldn’t even remember when Bluestreak first started calling him ‘pup.’ He knew it was sometime after they’d officially became an item, but Bluestreak seemed to have slipped it into his vocabulary so effortlessly that Hound took no notice of the first time he used it. He didn’t even notice when Bluestreak started using it in public.

In fact, it was only after Cliffjumper mentioned it that Hound thought about it.

“Why do you let him call you that?” Cliffjumper asked after Bluestreak left the rec room.

“Call me what?” Hound asked.

Something I was doing over on Tumblr (that I forgot all about) was reposting some of the one-off fics I wrote for the OTP prompt list.

I'd posted the one set that formed a little mini-series on Pillowfort, and I sort of liked how that worked.

I think I'll make an effort to do the same here, maybe posting one of those here a week or so. I feel a little bad that those fics are buried in a prompt compilation, since I know few people read those through. :)

Spoilers ahead for A Bonding, a Coronation, and a Funeral, in case you care about that! :)

Back when I was writing the final few scenes in A Bonding, a Coronation, and a Funeral, I ran into a block with one of the scenes. (I mentioned in on Twitter here.) After fighting with it for almost a week, I deleted it and started over with a totally new tact... And it worked.

The scene itself, as published, is in Chapter 20 of Bonding. It's the scene that begins with "The knock on the door was all the warning Smokescreen got before Prowl walked in with a tray of energon." I had several goals I wanted to accomplish with this scene:
  • I wanted to establish that Smokescreen was still struggling.
  • I wanted to give closure to what happened to Bombshell.
  • I wanted to finally give readers a look at the Inquisitors, who had only been mentioned in offhand comments at this point.
  • And I wanted to give closure to Strikeback's fate.
When I started writing this chapter, I started in chronological order. That makes sense, right? Except it just dragged. Getting each word down was like pulling teeth. So I went back to the drawing board and reframed it.

I ended up having the start of the chapter be Prowl coming to see Smokescreen, and having Smokescreen think back to what had happened between Bombshell and the Inquisitors. This way I could simultaneously show how much Smokescreen was struggling with everything (not sleeping, not eating, etc). Then I ended the chapter with him saying goodbye to Strikeback.

And it worked a lot better! I don't know if using this flashback/framing technique is better for the reader... but it works a lot better for my muse in situations like this. I've done this in a few other stories, but only when I've got a lot of stuff I need to cover in a single scene.

Anyway! The abandoned version of this scene is behind the cut. You can see that I went into a lot more detail about the Inquisitors. Some of the description was reused in the published version of the scene, but not all of it. (Also, the Inquistors will probably be making another appearance in the next long fic I have planned for this AU.) I also changed how intense Prowl and Jazz's parting was. ;)

Now that Bonding is done and posted I can relax.

…No, hah! Fooled you me! I’m doing the TF Big Bang instead. (holds head and sobs) But it’s all right. I think. I’m having trouble getting out of the first chapter, but I think I can still finish in time. I hope.

How about a progress report?

Finished
A Bonding, a Coronation, and a Funeral. 131,000 words total. This was supposed to be a fluffy short story, but it got way, way out of hand.

Long Fics
TF Big Bang story. Currently 6100 words, and I’m still working my way through the first chapter. I’d originally planned for five chapters of 4k words each, so… we’ll see how this goes.

Short Fics
Peer Review. 6000 words. New Sparkr story. Coming along, but set to the side because of other projects.
Untitled Heat Fic. 6400 words. Direct sequel to Reciprocity, Bluestreak POV but with a different partner. Mwaha.

Leaving out the fics that I’m outlining/plotting right now because I don’t want to get sidetracked. XD

Except this time, someone is out to kill him and his brothers.

Chapter 21: Life goes on.

And that's a wrap! It took me a year to write it, but the second major fic in the Alt Modes and Alchemy AU is done. Thanks for following along with me. :)
