Look to see if there are any patterns that you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any! Then tag some friends.
I got tagged by @rizobact for this… I’ll tag @meridianbarony, @spidingsadly and @drazyrohk if they’re interested! (And anyone else who wants to play.)
I decided to skip my compilations and prompts, so things like the bingo challenge or “Extras” stories are getting left out. That gets us further back in time with a broader (?) range of stories.
1. Sideswipe shifted uncomfortably on the rocky surface, but was careful not to disturb Sunstreaker. (A Thousand Years)
2. As another seizure wracked his frame, Bluestreak tried to figure out where, exactly, things had gone so terribly wrong. (Becoming)
3. Hound started feeling off as he was coming up the last stretch of highway before the turnoff for the Ark. (Reciprocity)
4. They were called the “next step in jaeger technology:” fully autonomous jaegers. (A Flash of Gold)
5. Most of the notes were there, in his helm. (Pulling Strings)
6. “Are ya sure ya want to go through with this?” Jazz asked, sitting on the edge of his chair and drumming out a rhythm with his fingers against the edge of Prowl’s desk. (Datastream)
7. Sideswipe was dead, to begin with. (Little Brother)
8. Hound settled on his recharge pad and waited for Bluestreak to get himself situated. (Stargazing)
9. It had been a good hunt. (After Tempest)
10. Jazz bounced on his pedes as they entered the park. (Public Indecency)
Hmm. So most of my first lines serve to orient the reader in time and establish the situation or character. Something I noticed is that a lot of these first sentences are followed by a line of dialogue, although I rarely start that way off the hop. Also, looking down the list, of the 10 lines, 7-ish of them have a character who’s alone or who has no one to talk to at the beginning of the story. Not sure what that says about me. XD
