It feels a little like I'm never going to finish Bonding, even though my outline shows that I'm very near the end... Relatively speaking. It's just that I've been writing this story non-stop since November 1, and it feels like it's never going to end! I posted a visual on Twitter to show how close to writing the end I actually am, and seeing it is very helpful... But when I look at the word processor I can't quite see that light at the end of the tunnel.
I think my estimate for how long Bonding is going to be was a little off. I estimated about 120k, but between what I've got posted and what I've written already, I'm already at that. So now I'm thinking it'll be closer to 130-140k, which makes this the longest single story I've ever written.
I've also been keeping track of my daily wordcount. I totally agree with this author who says that aiming for a daily wordcount is not sustainable... Especially since a) I write for a living already, and b) I'm not getting paid for this writing. If I had a really intense day at work, creativity-wise, I may very well have used up all my creative juices by the time I get home. And I also don't want to burn myself out.
So instead, I've been keeping track daily, but keeping a monthly word count in mind. I was thinking that I managed the 50k for NaNoWriMo with just some difficulty in November, so maybe 20k would be doable. Well, for February I came in at 24k for the month... and I wrote every single day... Mostly because I really want to get Bonding done. But it was hard, and I don't think that's sustainable for me in the long run.
Time for some new goals.
If I keep up my current pace, I should finish Bonding in March. So... Once it's done, I'm giving myself the rest of the month off. If I feel like doing some writing, great. If not, great. I have some games I want to catch up on, and some reading that I've been neglecting, so I'm going to coast for a bit and do that.
I do have some WIPs still in the fire, including a few fics that are already pretty close to being done! And there is a bunny that's bitten me hard that I'd also like to give some serious thought. But I'm not going to apply the whip to get them finished, at least not immediately. Once I'm done with this, it's time for some recuperation.
